Set up the extension once
Install ClickCutout from the Chrome Web Store on your computer. Open the extension, sign in with Google and allow image access when prompted. Your account includes 10 free background removals per month.
Choose PNG in the output settings if you want a transparent image for a presentation or design. The extension saves this choice. You can change it to WebP or JPEG later without setting up the extension again.
Remove the background and copy or download
For a photo already on a web page, you don’t need to save a copy before removing its background. Start from the image itself.
- Right-click the image and open the ClickCutout submenu.
- Choose the Copy action to put the cutout on your clipboard, or Download to save a file.
- After copying, paste with Ctrl+V on Windows or ⌘V on Mac in an app that supports image pasting. Downloaded files appear in your Downloads folder.
- View the image on the background you plan to use and adjust its size in your editor.
Start with the right version of the image
Before removing anything, inspect the source. A product photo that is 1,600 pixels wide usually gives the edge detector more information than a 220-pixel thumbnail. Look for a clear boundary between the subject and the background, limited motion blur, and enough room around the object. Hair, glass, smoke, and soft shadows are not impossible, but they leave less certainty at the edge.
Also check that you have the right to use the image. Background removal changes presentation, not ownership. If a page offers several image sizes, open the main image rather than working from a grid thumbnail. The few seconds spent choosing a cleaner source usually save more time than trying to repair a weak cutout later.
Images on sites with their own viewer
Some sites display photos through an interactive viewer or protect the original file. If Chrome’s menu does not offer normal image actions, look for an Open original or Download image control on the site.
ClickCutout works with web images that Chrome can access. Use the site’s download option for sources it does not expose as ordinary images, and keep a record of the source when you need attribution or permission to reuse it.
