Start with the background you want to remove
Imagine a shoe photo on a colored social post. The rectangle around the shoe belongs to the photo. The color behind the whole layout belongs to the page. Removing one does not automatically remove the other.
If the shoe should sit directly on your post’s color, you need a cutout. If the whole design should sit over another layout without a rectangular page behind it, you need a transparent export. Keep the image’s opacity at 100% when you want a solid subject with an invisible background.
Download the design as a transparent PNG
These steps apply to the design editor. Before exporting, remove any full-page photo or rectangle you do not want in the file, and set the page background to white. A shape behind your logo is still part of the artwork.
- Open Share > Download and choose PNG.
- Enable Transparent background and select the pages you need.
- Download, then place the file over a colored background to check it.
Remove the background from a photo inside Canva
Select the photo and choose BG Remover in the toolbar. In the photo editor, you may find it under Edit photo > Tools. After processing, inspect hair, straps, gaps between fingers and any lettering before you position the cutout.
To correct the result, reopen BG Remover and use Erase for leftover background or Restore for missing parts of the subject. Work on the original photo rather than a flattened screenshot of the whole design: a screenshot merges the photo, text and layout into one image.
BG Remover access depends on your Canva plan and any available trial allowance. Once the cutout is on the page, you can keep the page’s color for a finished post or use the transparent export steps above for a reusable asset.
What can you do with Canva Free?
You can upload an existing transparent PNG and use it in a free Canva design. For example, place a product cutout on a blue post, add your text, and download the finished rectangular post. You do not need a transparent export for that result.
Exporting the entire design with transparency is a different feature. Canva lists Pro, Teams, Business, Education and Nonprofits as eligible plans. If the option is unavailable, check your plan, select PNG and make sure you are not editing a Canva Doc.
If all you need is the individual cutout, keep the original transparent PNG and use that file elsewhere. Importing it into Canva does not unlock transparent export for a composition with added text and graphics.

Prepare a web image for Canva with ClickCutout
When your source is an ordinary image on your shop or a supplier’s website, ClickCutout lets you remove its background before bringing it into Canva. Use an image you have permission to reuse and open the largest available version, rather than a small thumbnail.
This workflow starts on the original web page. For a photo saved only on your computer, use an editor that accepts uploads. Canva’s design canvas is not the same as an ordinary web image, so start from the source photo rather than right-clicking the finished design.
- Install ClickCutout in desktop Chrome, sign in with Google, allow image access and select PNG.
- Right-click the source image, open ClickCutout and choose Download without background (PNG).
- Drag the saved PNG into Canva, or use Uploads > Upload files, then add it to your page.
- Place a colored shape behind it and check that the color shows around the subject. Keep the PNG for future designs.
If the downloaded image still looks white
A white preview is not enough to diagnose the file. Insert it over a dark shape in another design. If the dark color shows around the subject, the file is transparent and the viewer was simply displaying a white canvas.
- White across the whole page: check the PNG export setting and look for a full-page background element.
- White only around one photo: remove that photo’s background before exporting the design.
- A checkerboard that moves with the picture: the pattern may be baked into the image. Find a real transparent source.
- The subject looks washed out: restore its opacity to 100%; fading the image does not isolate it.
- Fine white edges: inspect the cutout against both light and dark colors, then correct the mask or choose a cleaner source.
