Use Google Slides’ built-in background remover
On a computer, select the photo on your slide, then choose Edit image > Remove background. Google also lists the route Format > Image > Edit image > Remove background. Review the outline against the slide color before adjusting the layout.
Google requires an eligible Workspace or Google One AI Premium subscription. If the action is missing, check which Google account you are using and its feature eligibility. To recover the original after removal, use Undo or version history; Google says Reset image does not restore it.
If Remove background is unavailable
Prepare the cutout outside Slides and insert it as a PNG. If the photo is saved on your computer, use an image editor with background removal or a selection mask, then export with transparency. For an image on a web page, use the Chrome workflow below.
You do not need to buy an add-on just to insert a cutout you already have. Keep the original file as well as the transparent version so you can correct an edge later without starting from a compressed slide screenshot.
Why the rectangle appears
An image is still a rectangle even when the interesting part is a person, product, plant, or icon. If the pixels around that subject are white, the slide editor faithfully shows a white box. Sending the image backward only moves the whole box behind other objects. It does not isolate the subject.
Transparency solves a different problem. It makes the surrounding pixels invisible, so the slide background and nearby shapes remain visible. The subject can then overlap a color block, cross a column boundary, or sit beside text without carrying its old backdrop.
Changing the slide background changes the canvas behind every object. Adjusting an image’s opacity fades all its pixels. Neither operation removes the white pixels surrounding a person or product.
Add the transparent PNG to your slide
For an image on a web page, select PNG in ClickCutout, right-click the image and choose its Copy action. Open your presentation, click the slide canvas and paste with Ctrl+V on Windows or ⌘V on Mac.
To use a downloaded PNG in Google Slides, open Insert > Image > Upload from computer, then select the file. Keep a copy in the project folder if your teammates will need the same image later.
Align the subject with your text
Once the background is gone, place the subject where it helps the slide. Use the visible person or object as your reference point and ignore the empty transparent area around it. Leave room in front of a face or an object that points in one direction so the composition does not feel cramped.
Avoid enlarging a small web thumbnail until it becomes soft. Background removal does not create missing detail. Start from the largest legitimate source available, then scale down in the slide.
- Keep the original aspect ratio while resizing.
- Use one soft shadow only if it matches the rest of the deck.
- Do not outline every cutout to hide a poor edge. Fix or replace the source.
Check the edge on the real background
A cutout that looks fine on a checkerboard may show a pale edge on a dark slide. Move it over the lightest and darkest parts of the design. If you use ClickCutout to copy the PNG into your slide editor, do this check before you finish the layout.
View the finished slide at presentation size. If the image looks sharp and its edge blends with the slide, it is ready to use. If a pale outline is visible, check the original photo or correct the edge before enlarging the image further.
