# Put a transparent image in PowerPoint without a white box

Prepare a transparent PNG, insert it into the slide and check it against the slide’s actual background. Lowering a photo’s overall opacity makes the subject transparent too; it does not isolate the subject.

**In this guide**

**The short version**

- Prepare a transparent PNG, insert it into the slide and check it against the slide’s actual background.
- For a picture already in a supported desktop Office version, Microsoft documents a built-in background-removal tool. Check its result before adding another tool.

## Choose the route that fits your source

For a picture already in a supported desktop Office version, Microsoft documents a built-in background-removal tool. Check its result before adding another tool.

For a reusable web photo, you can prepare the cutout in Chrome. Open [ClickCutout](https://clickcutout.com/en/), sign in and allow image access. Select PNG, right-click the permitted image and choose Download. Insert that file into PowerPoint with the picture insertion control. Clipboard pasting is another option when the destination accepts it; a saved PNG is easier to check and reuse.

## Work through a portrait slide

Imagine a speaker portrait beside a title on a dark blue slide. Insert the PNG, keep its proportions and size it for the visible face and shoulders. Transparent margins can make two equal-width files look different, so compare the subjects rather than their file boxes.

Check the hair against blue and then a temporary pale background. A rectangle points to an opaque file or a shape behind it; a narrow fringe attached to the hair is an edge-quality issue.

## Verify before sharing

If copying creates a white box but inserting the downloaded PNG works, use the file route. If both show the same box, inspect the source and output setting. JPEG output deliberately adds a solid color.

[ClickCutout](https://clickcutout.com/en/) keeps source dimensions. Use a sharper source if the portrait looks soft; enlarging a thumbnail cannot recover missing detail.

## Use PowerPoint’s own removal tool when appropriate

For a photo already in a supported desktop version of PowerPoint, select the picture and look for Picture Format > Remove Background. Review the marked areas, preserve any part of the person that should remain, then keep the changes. The available labels depend on the version and language. If the control is missing, check Microsoft’s supported versions instead of reducing the picture’s overall opacity.

Keep a copy of the source before editing. Compare the result with the original around glasses, hair and clothing. If you download a PNG from Chrome instead, insert that saved file rather than a screenshot of its preview. Reopen the finished presentation and check the actual slide you will share; a correct file can still be covered by a white shape in the layout.
