# Make an interior design mood board with furniture cutouts

A sofa, a lamp and a chair from three shops rarely arrive on matching backgrounds. Transparent cutouts let you place them on one board and compare the pieces against the same wall color or material sample.

**In this guide**

**The short version**

- Compare furniture on a shared background and retain the product links.
- Use dimensions to check fit; the size of a cutout on a mood board does not prove it.

## Choose views that work together

Start with the piece you are keeping, such as an existing sofa, and collect a small set of alternatives for the items around it. Choose front or similar three-quarter views when possible. A chair photographed from above is difficult to compare with a sofa photographed straight on, even after both backgrounds are removed.

Open the main product image instead of using a search thumbnail. Record the product name, finish, dimensions and source link while the page is open. If the shop provides images for professional use, use those. An attractive board becomes less useful when you cannot find the exact lamp again.

## Remove the shop backgrounds

Use your board editor’s background removal if it already meets your needs. Houzz Pro, for example, documents background removal for mood board items. If you are gathering references in Chrome for another editor, [ClickCutout](https://clickcutout.com/en/) gives you a cutout from the source page.

Set up the extension with image access and Google sign-in, then choose PNG output. Right-click an accessible product image, open ClickCutout and copy the result. Paste it into an editor that supports images, or download the PNG and insert the file. Keep PNG or WebP selected for transparency; JPEG applies a solid background.

## Build a board around the decision you need

For a reading corner, place the chair and lamp beside the existing sofa reference. Add a rectangular paint sample behind them and keep a fabric or timber close-up along one edge. Material samples can stay rectangular: their surface is what you are trying to show.

Duplicate the board to compare a second chair. Keep the sofa, lamp and paint sample in the same places. If you also change the rug and wall color, it becomes much harder to tell why one version feels different. Label the alternatives with product names so the client can give precise feedback.

## Check size and finishes outside the collage

Give objects believable relative sizes on the board. A floor lamp should not look smaller than a table lamp just because its source image has more empty space. The image boundary includes transparent margins, so compare the visible objects rather than matching the dimensions of their image boxes.

Still check furniture dimensions against the room plan. A collage cannot confirm clearances or perspective. Screen images also cannot settle whether two woods or fabrics match in person. Keep those questions attached to the board and resolve them with measurements and physical samples.

## Look under the chair before sharing

Put the cutouts over a dark color briefly and inspect chair legs, spaces between spindles and lamp cables. These small details can disappear during automatic removal. Glass shades and reflective surfaces need a closer look because their original surroundings may remain visible inside the object.

Save the editable board with its product references, then export the version you want reviewed. Keep an alternative marked as an alternative rather than quietly replacing the approved item. That leaves a clear record of which furniture and finishes the next discussion concerns.

## Try a furniture image on your own board

Copy a transparent cutout from Chrome with ClickCutout, then compare it with the pieces you have already chosen.
